Real stories: Two immigrants hurt by the Fifty-Five Fifty management and Avenue5.

Here's ANOTHER STORY, ABOUT ANOTHER DISADVANTAGED IMMIGRANT

A Colombian immigrant -- we'll call him Jose -- was forced to leave when his rent skyrocketed.

Jose had lived in the building for years. He loved living in Hollywood. He worked in fashion -- and even started his own brand. He liked being close to all the action. But as a young business owner just starting out, money was tight. He budgeted so he could afford his rent, but then, out of nowhere, his rent was radically increased.

Management sent him a notice that his rent would be increased over 9% -- and over the state imposed limit at the time.

Jose just couldn't afford the new rate. He had to move.

Since the increase was quite so high -- over the state limit at the time -- Jose should have been entitled to moving expenses. But he wasn't paid a dime.

Maybe didn't advocate for himself hard enough. Management might say he didn't ask in the right terms. But he was an immigrant, scared to cause a problem, and not quite sure how things in this country work. English isn't his first language. So he never got anything. The cost of moving -- because he rent was increased -- he had to pay for, while he looked for a new spot he could afford.

threats and RETALIATION AGAINST CANADIAN IMMIGRANT

Threats against an immigrant for tenant-organizing.

  • This tenant, we'll call him Rick, immigrated to the United States at the age of 24 from Canada. He was born a US citizen, but he was raised in Canada, so he was excited to live in the United States for the first time. Well, he never anticipated when moved to LA that he'd be the victim of retaliation from his landlord.

  • Rick received a letter from management trying to raise his rent by some 20%. Yes, you read that right, 20% in one increase. When the building found out they'd need to pay him moving expenses, which he -- unlike the unfortunate Colombian immigrant -- did forcefully demand, they lowered his rent increase. But the very next year, his rent was increase yet again -- even as building issues continued to get worse. Well, Rick had enough. He knew he had the right to pursue collective action, so he decided to form a tenants association.

  • Rick printed off some posters at his own expense, and put them up around the building. He used high-quality blue painter's tape, so he could be sure he wouldn't harm the building walls. And he intentionally put the posters in unobtrusive places where they wouldn't get in the way of other things. Rick didn't think this would be an issue. After all, he had put up plenty of posters for social events in the past, and nobody ever objected.

  • But since these posters concerned tenant-organizing, there was a BIG issue. Within hours of the posters going up, the building manager tore them all down and threw them in the trash.

  • When Rick wrote to the management company. A vice president (VP) from the company admitted that management ordered the posters to be taken down. They said they violated some rule -- even though the social posters had been allowed to remain up for weeks.

  • Management even threatened Rick, telling him they had him on video, and implying worse things could come.

  • But Rick was brave. He wouldn't be intimidated. Rick wrote to management and informed them of his right to put up posters for tenant organizing.

  • You know what management did? They called in their high priced lawyer (it seems a company Vice President wasn't enough to deal with this young man's posters), and the lawyer threatened Rick even FURTHER! The lawyer ordered Rick to "refrain from" trying to "speak with other residents about building operations" or else "enforcement action" would be taken against him. This sort of suppression of organizing is totally illegal in Los Angeles.

  • While this case is ongoing (we'll update it when we learn more), even this first chapter illustrates the threats and retaliation that building management has leveled against this young Canadian immigrant.
